In 2023, during his senior year of high school, Grady Walston founded ASTRO 9, a mental health awareness clothing brand that designs shirts aimed at reminding those who suffer in silence that they matter. His love for outer space and the number 9 inspired the tagline of one of his first designs: "When the pressure to be a 10 is out of this world… just try to be a 9!" What started as a hundred shirts quickly grew to six hundred, then a thousand. A simple Cricut from Target evolved into two professional heat presses, constantly in use in their West Des Moines home, with the kitchen counter transformed from a breakfast area into a staging ground for incoming orders.
Once Grady realized that this profitable side hustle could have a more significant impact, he decided to donate a portion of each shirt's proceeds to Ellipsis in Des Moines, supporting local youth in crisis. Fast forward two years, and now a sophomore in college, Grady has printed nearly 3,000 shirts and raised over $5,000 for Ellipsis. You can often find ASTRO 9 at Jordan Creek Mall on weekends or participating in “Pop-Up” events in neighboring communities. Grady or his mom are always there, giving away free stickers, ASTRO 9 wristbands that say "#YouMatter," and 3D printed astronauts. The only requirement? You just have to say one thing out loud that you love about yourself to claim the freebies! It's a beautiful way to remind everyone to love themselves to the moon and back—because you matter with ASTRO 9.
